Wake Forest University School of Medicine – Postbaccalaureate Fellows

We are excited to share with you information for an exciting a new postbaccalaureate program in the Department of Cancer Biology (https://school.wakehealth.edu/departments/cancer-biology) at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. The program called Wake PREP2PhD is intended for those who will graduate in Spring 2025, or who recently graduated, and who want to gain valuable research experience in preparation for entry into a PhD program. Wake PREP2PhD is intending to target students who are historically underrepresented in science, including those from an economically disadvantaged background. 4 fellows will be recruited.

Wake PREP2PhD is a 2-year paid program (starting at $38K/year) where you will work full time in the laboratory doing cancer research, while also receiving important scientific and professional development such as scientific communication, application assistance, peer and professional networking, and more. The selected scholars will earn a stipend, be eligible for healthcare coverage, be provided a laptop (if necessary), and be eligible for financial moving assistance, in addition to rigorous scientific training.

Disease areas in the Department of Cancer Biology cover breast, prostate, lung, brain, leukemia, and other cancers with research topics covering genomics, signaling, therapeutic development, immuno-oncology, microbiome, and metabolism, among other topics.

The Department of Cancer Biology at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine is the discovery science hub for the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center (AHWFBCCC). Departmental faculty engage in cutting edge research on signaling, genomics, metabolism, microbiome, immuno-oncology, therapeutic development, and metastatic mechanisms in a range of cancers including breast, lung, prostate, brain, leukemias, melanoma and more in a collaborative environment. The Department is home to the Cancer Biology PhD program and faculty train PhD and MS students from other programs including Molecular Medicine and Translational Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, and Integrative Physiology and Pharmacology. The department has a robust URM summer training program and multiple training grants. All Cancer Biology faculty have membership in the AHWFBCCC, providing access to world-class instrumentation and shared resources to support research.

The department is recruiting at the level of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in the areas of cancer metabolism and its regulation, cancer and the microbiome, and dietary interactions in cancer and metabolism to bolster and grow our existing expertise. Candidates should have an interest in cross-disciplinary team and translational science. In addition to the other departmental faculty, the candidate will have opportunities to collaborate with faculty across the institution, including other basic science departments, the Wake Forest Institute of Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM), the Virginia Tech-Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (SBES), the Sticht Center on Aging, the Center for Precision Medicine, the Center for Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, and other research entities.

The Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center is a leader in cancer care, transdisciplinary research, and education. The Cancer Center is celebrating its 50th year of designation from the National Cancer Institute in 2024. AHWFBCCC provides innovative, relevant cancer research, increases access to high quality cancer care and clinical trials, trustworthy engagement and outreach, and meaningful pipeline programs that foster workforce diversity, equity and inclusion. Friends of Cancer Research (Friends) is seeking a Science Policy Fellow for a six-month term to be a part of our fast-paced science policy team. Friends works to accelerate policy change and support groundbreaking science to enable efficient development and earlier availability of safe and effective new therapies for patients. We drive collaboration among partners from every healthcare sector to power advances in science, policy, and regulation. We unite scientists, pharmaceutical companies, cancer and research advocates, and policymakers with shared trust and guide them towards meaningful cooperation.
The Science Policy Fellow works with all members of the Science Policy Team to: Develop project material and meeting summary documents; Write and analyze scientific and policy documents; and All other duties, as assigned.

The ideal candidate is a highly motivated individual and self-starter who can collaborate effectively within a small but nimble organization. Candidates should be a current graduate, postdoctoral, or professional school student pursuing a terminal degree (e.g., Ph.D., M.D.) or have obtained a terminal degree within the last five years and have interest in cancer research and health policy. Candidates should be based in the United States and not require visa sponsorship from Friends of Cancer Research in order to remain in the U.S. during the fellowship dates. Although not required, the ideal candidate will benefit from the following knowledge and skills:

  • Show initiative.
  • Be highly organized, including being able to manage multiple projects and deadlines, and being attentive to detail.
  • Have strong written and oral scientific communications skills.
  • Have experience with the Microsoft suite (i.e., Excel, PowerPoint, Word).

This is an excellent opportunity for an intelligent, creative, and motivated cancer research scientist interested in exploring a new career path and develop professional skills. Over the course of 6 months, you will learn how a growing non-profit organization functions and gain valuable experience in aspects of health and science policy research, cancer advocacy, and federal government relations.
